Year 6 ~ Mrs Martin and Miss Coupe
Welcome Year 6
2020-2021
Welcome to Our Year Six Page, where we will keep you informed of our learning and what we've been up to in class.
Our First Topic is - Decisive Decisions and we are studying the Victorian Era. To kick-start our topic, we all researched an area of the Victorian Era, which interested us and then presented our research back to our year group in the form of posters, recipes, photographs, books, models and information.
Our second topic is Crime and Punishment - we will begin our topic by collaborating our initial ideas and knowledge in mentimeter. We will then look at Crime across the ages - Romans, Anglo-Saxon, Viking, Medieval, Tudor, Victorians and Modern day. We will add pic collages of our work as we gain more knowledge on this exciting subject.

Christmas Party Day!
During the morning, we played a selection of party games in the hall - these continued when we went back into class! Then, in the afternoon, the feast began!
Day of the Dead
As we have been learning all about the Maya, we decided to hold our own 'Day of the Dead' celebrations in school. The children were allowed to dress up in traditional Mexican costumes if they wished to and we had a fabulous day. In the morning, we tasted a variety of chocolate (blindfolded), including dark chocolate with chilli and another with raspberry. We also painted rocks inspired by Day of the Dead designs - they looked really effective!
Making Poppies
As part of our 100 years celebrations in school, we made felt poppies by sewing together heart-shaped petals and adding buttons for the centre. The children worked really hard to create them and did so well to support and help each other whilst we were sewing. We also learnt about the tomb of the unknown soldier in our Values lessons this week.

Rock and Roll Dancing
This half term, with the help of Coach Sophie, we have been learning rock and roll dancing. We learnt how to hand jive in groups to some music from Grease. We have also taken part in some paired dancing, learning all the tricks and flicks that are part of this genre of dance.

Our Mayan Homework Presentations
Well done to all the children (and parents) who took the time to complete some homework over the summer holidays. They were very impressive and displayed a variety of interesting facts. The children have presented their work to the rest of year 6 and it is now going to be displayed in the year 6 corridor for the rest of our school to see and enjoy!

Our topic this term is The Mayan Civilisation.
Our topic this term is The Mayan Civilisation.
To begin our topic we completed our own research project, where we chose a topic of The Maya's life to find out about and chose how to present the information back to year 6. Some of us completed art work, PowerPoint presentations, model building, artefacts, posters, booklets, photographs and captions and more. See our slideshow of us presenting our projects.
At the end of Autumn term 1 we celebrated the Day of the Dead - Dia de los Meurtos and also tied in some Mayan traditions too. We had a chocolate tasting competition -chocolate was the Maya's favourite food. Completed a quiz all about chocolate, its origins and the beliefs people have had about chocolate in the past!
We completed art work imitating images of the DoD, made huge skull art and made our own chocolate skulls and tortillas with homemade salsa. See our slideshow of our topic day and see what we got up to :)
