Year 3 - Miss Walters and Miss Redman

Welcome to our year 3 page where you can see what we've been up to in our learning.

National Mining Museum

On Thursday 27th April Y3 visited the National Mining Museum in Wakefield. We got to go on an underground tour and explore what it was like to mine coal in the Victorian times and in more modern times. We also visited the pit baths, winding engines, learnt about safety lamps and visited the pit ponies and horses. We all had an amazing day and learnt lots about mining.

After the Easter holidays, Y3 will be beginning their Mining topic. We will be learning all about how communities were built around the collieries, how the mines worked and we have an exciting trip to the National Coal Mining Museum planned where we will experience going down a real mine shaft!

Egyptian Partake Day

On the 27th March, Y3 took part in an Egyptian Day run by Partake. During the day, the children had the opportunity to re-enact an Ancient Egyptian funeral. This included learning about the preparation of the body, the ceremony and customs. They also took part in two workshops where they experienced spice mixing for perfumes and handled artefacts.

Egyptian Day

After the Christmas holidays, Y3's new topic will be Ancient Egypt. We will be learning all about the pharaohs, ancient customs and comparing life in Ancient Egyptian times to our lives today. Please see the poster below for an overview of what we will be learning during the spring term.

After half a term learning about the Stone Age, we had a trip to Creswell Crags to learn all above the Stone Age people that settled there.

We had a fantastic day participating in so many different activities. We really enjoyed getting to explore a cave, play musical instruments, look at and talk about the different tools/ weapons they used and have a go at hunting. We got to throw a spear at bison. Quite a few of us were successful and caught the bison for lunch!

We worked as a team to build a shelter from wood and animal skin and fur and also observed how they would make fire before having a go at the technique ourselves.

We then learned all about different types of rocks and stone especially flint and iron pyrite (fools gold) which Stone Age people used to make fire. We learned that the caves are made from limestone and that a soft rock they used would be clay to help them mould weapons and tools.

Times tables practice and division word problems.

PE

In PE, we learnt how to travel using apparatus in the hall. One of our challenges was to move between the different pieces of apparatus in different ways, including getting onto and off each piece.
