Outdoor Learning

Outdoor Learning at Newlands...

Outdoor learning at Newlands includes: various outdoor experiences, projects, environmental education, recreational and adventure activities, personal and social development and team building experiences. ‘Outdoor learning’ is an umbrella term for a range of approaches that use activities and experiences in the outdoors which lead to learning, increased health and wellbeing, and environmental awareness. Our goal is to supplement, enhance and enrich our curriculum in order for our children to be aware of the benefits that being outside can provide.

Outdoor Learning Intent, Implementation and Impact statement

Spring 2 - Y5 - Art

Within art we have been creating wire sculptures using Rachel Ducker as our inspiration. Once we had completed them, we created an outdoor sculpture park by placing them in different outdoor areas around the school.

Spring 1 - Y3 - Science

We attempted being a botanist by taking pictures of different plants within our outdoor areas and then sketched them trying to depict each detail that we could.

Spring 1 - Y4 - Geography

We used the outdoor spaces to re-create Italy's most famous landmarks using only natural resources. The landmarks we created included the colosseum, Trevi Fountain, The Leaning Tower of Piza and much more.

Spring 1 - Y5 - Science

We have been learning about air resistance and the effect this can have on moving objects. We used the outdoor space to test how the size and shape of parachutes can have impact upon the rate in which an object falls.

Spring 1 - Y6 - Time to Talk

We used our outdoor spaces to gather a range of different stones. We then thought about the impact that positivity has upon our lives and why this important. Finally, we planted the stones to help us realise that positivity and talking about our feelings must always be a part of our lives.

Autumn 1 - 24/25 - Year 3 RE

In Year 3 we have been learning about the creation story from the bible and understanding how Christians believe that the world and everything around us was created in 7 days. To demonstrate our understanding, we were all tasked with showing a single day within the story using only things we could find outside.

Autumn 1 - 24/25 - Year 4 Art & Design

In year 4 we have been learning about repeated patterns and tessellation. We went outside and used natural resources and textures, that are all around our school, to create a range of different wax rubbings to then use in a class mosaic.

Autumn 1 - 24/25 - Year 5 Spellings

We have been practicing a range of different spelling rules by using natural resources we find outside to create and show the different vocabulary we have been looking at this half term.

Autumn 1 - 24/25 - Year 6 Art & Design

Year 6 have been exploring a range of different patterns and motifs by the famous designer William Morris. We identified that many of his designs were inspired by nature and so we decided to go outside and use our natural surroundings to record patterns we see. After that we then started to show our patterns and designs within nature using only natural resources when doing so.
